The Department of Gastroenterology

FOSTERING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BEGINS IN THE GUT

Gastroenterology (GI) is the branch of medicine which traditionally encompasses disorders of the stomach, intestines, liver, and the pancreas.

HERE IS A LIST OF COMMON GI DISORDERS AND RELATED MEDICAL PROBLEMS:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Esophagitis
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease
  • Colon Polyps and Colon Cancer
  • Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Liver disease
  • Pancreatic disease
  • Diverticulitis and Diverticulosis
  • Celiac disease
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Gastroparesis

While the management of these disorders is a major focus of our field, we emphasize prevention and getting to the root cause of disease. We do this by managing the gut microbiome. The human microbiome is a consortium of over 100 trillion organisms living in the human gut whose collective genome contains at least 100x as many genes as our own genome. It is a crucial moderator in the interactions between ingested food and our body through metabolites that either promote health or disease. When properly cared for, the microorganisms that live in our gut help to regulate our entire bodily system, giving rise to the idea that "health begins in your gut”.

New scientific evidence reveals that nutrition and lifestyle have a major impact on the microbiome, so part of our mandate is to lead patients toward a healthier way of life, which can lead to overall wellness. Traditionally most doctors have disregarded the importance of lifestyle and nutrition in disease prevention, disease reversal, health and vitality, but our team of doctors emphasize these important factors to help you achieve optimal health.

                              Dr. Angie Sadeghi, MD

“Historically, medical practitioners have overlooked the power of lifestyle and nutrition in disease prevention. My goal is to empower my patients to incorporate healthy lifestyle habits and evidence-based medical therapies to ensure long and vigorous lives.”

                              Dr. Amita Kalra, MD

“Understanding the mind-gut connection is crucial in treating many GI conditions. Once we can correct the misaligned links, we see long-lasting positive changes and the beginning of a healthier life.”"
